How Are Soy Curls Made

Are you familiar with Soy Curls?

Soy Curls are often used as a meat replacement in vegetarian and vegan diets. While soy curls are technically a 'processed' food, the label reveals they're essentially a one-ingredient food made from Whole Non-GMO Soy Beans.

According to Butler Foods, the manufacturer of Soy Curls, their soybeans are grown in the USA on a family farm, certified non-GMO, and grown without chemical pesticides or glyphosate. They describe the product as "plant-based protein strips that are heart-healthy, delicious, and easy to use!"

How are Soy Curls made?

The soybeans are soaked in spring water (with no chlorine or fluoride), and then stirred while being cooked. No chemicals, additives, or preservatives are added during the process.

The cooking liquid and beans are gently agitated to create an emulsified mixture which is then forced through an extruder into short, strip-like pieces.

The strips are then dried at a low temperature to preserve some of the benefits of the whole soy bean, such as the fiber.

The Bottom Line

Soy Curls are essentially dehydrated strips of soy. Once they're re-hydrated, the strips will approximately double in size and act as a meat replacement in fajitas, stir frys, burritos, tacos, salads, sandwiches, soups, casseroles, sloppy joes, or anywhere meat strips or ground beef is typically used.

The nice thing about Soy Curls is their versatility. You can use them as strips, or pulse the re-hydrated strips in the food processor to resemble ground beef. Plus, they take on the flavor of whatever seasonings, broth, sauces, or marinades you're using.

Statistically, Soy Curls are high in protein and fiber, gluten-free, and contain no added sugars, sodium, or trans fats; and of course they contain no cholesterol, because it's a plant food.
