Suppose you're not feeling well, so you pay a visit to your local doctor. You're diagnosed with an ailment and most likely given a prescription.....one that you may have seen advertised on TV, and perhaps you've even asked about it. (Side Note: the United States and New Zealand are the ONLY two countries that allow drug makers to advertise to the public. And why wouldn't they, since sales of advertised drugs are 8x higher than others.)
Following your doctor's appointment - and now that you're taking a new medication - you later discover there's a much safer, more sensible answer to your health problem; one that you'd never been told about. Would you be upset that your doctor hadn't explained EVERY option, along with their side effects and how effective they really are?
Even more concerning is the fact that drug companies spend $15,000 per physician to market their products and influence doctor's decisions. Would it bother you that the treatment you received was possibly swayed by the gifts, free lunches and 'education' your doctor received from the pharmaceutical sales reps?
Do you consider that a conflict of interest, as most of the public does? If so, would you be interested to know how much your physician actually receives every year from the drug companies? Now there's a way to find out.
Dr. Michael Greger tells the whole story in a recent post - I encourage you to check it out here, and then quickly research your own doctor (especially cardiologists, who according to the report, receive the most payments.)
One thing is more important than what your doctor is prescribing - and that is your decision about whether or not you'll follow that advice. You do have the right to say NO. It's your health on the line. Please do your research, try to find the root cause of your health problems (up to 90% of the time, it's the FOOD.) Reversing the cause will often reverse the ailment, without the need for a lifelong regimen of prescription meds.
Be an aware, educated consumer - especially when it comes to your health.
