Alcohol and Cancer Risk

October 24, 2019 By Cyd Notter

For years, I was somewhat suspicious about the health claims touted by the alcohol industry; but I also believed it was no big deal if alcohol was consumed moderately. There was no science behind my beliefs at all. Perhaps I too was swayed by the Alcohol Industry's marketing messages or maybe the fact that I was raised by parents who owned a bar.

However, I began to do more research on the topic while writing The "Plan A" Diet. I looked into many credible websites and studies. And what I discovered was that the Alcohol Industry (AI) has done a great job in keeping the public relatively ignorant, uncertain, and in denial about the "alcohol causes cancer" message.

Dr. Michael Greger has several videos on the topic of alcohol, but take a look at this one titled Can Alcohol Cause Cancer, Here are a few of the statistics/tidbits he shares:

  • Even at low levels of consumption, alcohol increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, colon, liver, larynx, and female breast (contributing to more than 100,000 cases of breast cancer each year).
  • It also contributes to other cancers, such as pancreas, prostate, and melanoma.
  • Alcohol is attributable to nearly 6% of all cancer deaths worldwide. (My note: This may not seem like much, but in the U.S. that would equate to over 10 million alcohol-related cancer diagnoses annually, resulting in over 3.5 million deaths.)
  • It's considered a highly intoxicating neurotoxin (poison) which can cause brain damage and aggression.
  • Alcohol contributes to weight gain, even in moderate drinkers.
  • It increases the levels of sex hormones. Even though a high fiber diet helps offset some of those effects by carrying excess estrogen out of the body, there does not appear to be any 'safe' level from a cancer standpoint.
  • The AI manipulates the science in order to generate profit, often denying or distorting the evidence and distracting the public away from the harmful messages.
  • The AI ironically contributes to cancer risk in the name of prevention! Consider Mike's Hard Pink Lemonade, complete with pink carcinogens and a ribbon on the carton.
  • Why aren't doctors informing their patients about these risks? One reason is that most are drinkers themselves.
  • And because doctors ignore the evidence, alcohol is one of cancer's best kept secrets.

The bottom line was summarized in one research paper as this: The consumption of alcohol, an addictive carcinogen, cannot be a healthy lifestyle choice.

Here's another article of interest stating that for women, having just one alcoholic drink per day increased the risk for alcohol-related cancers (mainly breast cancer) by 13 percent, compared with those who consumed no alcohol.

Based on the latest research, it would be irresponsible for me to condone even light or moderate drinking on a regular basis. There’s probably no harm in having an occasional drink at a wedding or a holiday celebration—that is your decision. But routine alcohol consumption, even at low levels, cannot be considered an acceptable part of a healthy diet.

Here's a link to the article about alcohol as it appears in my book, where you can read more about the ties between AI and our government, and also how AI distorts the research to make alcohol appear healthy.

Please don't shoot the messenger on this one, but please do consider the risk factors when making your choices.

Are Soy Foods Safe?

August 30, 2018 By Cyd Notter

Dear Coach: I’ve heard that we should not eat soy because of the estrogen raising our cancer risk, and yet I notice that you use tofu in some of your recipes. Is soy harmful or not? Lori

Dear Lori: Thanks for your question about soy. It’s one of the most asked questions I hear during my presentations, and much confusion exists around this topic.  (Continue Reading Here....)

My dear friend, I pray that everything may go well with you and that you may be in good health—as I know you are well in spirit. (3 John 1:2, GNT)

Is a Hot Dog Really Worth it?

August 9, 2018 By Cyd Notter

Hey there ~ I recently submitted the below 'Letter to the Editor' to two local newspapers. Please share this vital information with your family and friends.

Dear Editor,

Summertime. The season of cooperative weather, gardening, and enjoying our favorite outdoor activities. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, summer is also known as “peak” hot dog season. Not only are hot dogs regularly served at our social gatherings and picnics, they’re available at festivals, baseball games, store parking lots, fund raisers, and gas stations.

The red tubes filled with a variety of meat pastes, fillers, salt, preservatives, nitrates and flavorings are especially celebrated in hot dog eating contests on National Hot Dog Day. According to marketplace.org, Americans consume around 20 billion hot dogs each year (that’s over 70 per person), with 150 million being eaten on the fourth of July alone.

The public is largely unaware of the connection between processed meats and the very real cancer risk. The American Institute of Cancer Research wholeheartedly agrees with the World Health Organization’s report that processed meats (hot dogs, bacon, sausage, pepperoni, ham, jerky, deli meats, and anything smoked or canned) are ranked in the highest cancer-causing category, along with asbestos, arsenic and tobacco.

Processed meats are KNOWN carcinogens (not just linked to cancer, but initiators of cancer). One daily hot dog, 2 slices of bacon, or one smoked sausage increases the risk for colon cancer by 18%. And that’s just for one portion. All other meats, such as beef, chicken and pork, are ranked in the “probably causes cancer” category.

Processed meats also raise the risk of stomach, prostate and pancreatic cancer. Yet we continue to promote eating a food that’s a bigger contributor to cancer than smoking. I continually strive to raise awareness of the connection between diet and disease by awakening people to the health risks of the Standard American Diet (SAD). The colorectal cancer rates have doubled in recent years in younger adults, and I urge local organizations who sell processed meats, host social events or promote contests to take these matters seriously. Diet is the biggest determinant of our health (greater than genetics or environmental exposures). A whole food, plant-based diet is your best defense in the prevention and reversal of our ever-growing disease rates.

Quiz: Which Food is a Top-Rated Cancer Causer?

August 31, 2017 By Cyd Notter

Take the Food Quiz:

  1. What may you be eating that's classified in the same cancer-causing category as asbestos, arsenic and cigarettes?
  2. What foods being served in all of mainstream America are ranked in the highest of five possible categories of cancer-causing substances?
  3. What popular foods has the American Institute of Cancer Research warned us that we should totally avoid?
  4.  What one serving of food can raise your risk of colon cancer by 18% (and who stops at just ONE)?
  5.  What foods being served at many cancer fundraisers are ironically the same foods that cause cancer?

The answers are found here, my friends, and I pray that you'll take this message to heart.  No food is worth the risk of hearing "I'm sorry, you have cancer."

“Don’t become so well adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.  Instead, fix your attention on God.  You’ll be changed from the inside out.”  (Romans 12:2a, MSG)

Hot dogs, pepperoni, bacon, sausage, jerky – really worth cancer?

November 5, 2015 By Cyd Notter

Did you see the headlines last week scrolling across the bottom of the news channels or being posted on line?  The World Health Organization (WHO) reported in The Lancet that processed meats are "carcinogenic to humans" and ranked them in the top cancer risk category (the same category as asbestos, tobacco and arsenic).  Processed meats include hot dogs, bacon, ham, sausages, corned beef, jerky, canned meats.....anything that's been salted, cured, fermented or smoked.   Red meats such as beef, veal, lamb and pork were rated "2a - Probably causes cancer."

The American Institute for Cancer Research supports this research and hopes it will spread the message "that what we eat plays a role in cancer risk."

Those of us who follow a whole foods, plant-based diet have been talking about this for years.  Hot dogs, bacon, and meat lovers pizza - with sausage and pepperoni -  are constantly advertised on TV.   And having recently attended a German Festival, believe me when I say that sausage is alive and well.

Will this report finally get people's attention?  Or will the news be ignored while processed meats are even served at cancer fundraisers?  I'm praying for the former.

Read a great article here
